HC Porto: Portugal's first professional ice hockey club is born
HC Porto was founded in July 2023 with one purpose: to develop Portuguese ice hockey and raise its profile. Under an agreement between the Portuguese and Spanish winter sports federations and the IIHF, the club was admitted to the Liga Nacional de Hockey Hielo, the top level of ice hockey in Spain, as its first Portuguese member.
With no rink in Portugal, HC Porto plays its home games at rinks across Spain. The first roster brings together players from Portugal, Latvia, Switzerland, the USA and Canada, led by head coach Jim Aldred. The pre-season camp takes place in Madrid in September 2023, before the opening games on 23 September.
